Before Loadin' The Six Pounders Mate..
Find out who you really are on the ship. May these great ladies and gentlemen be your inspirations.

Captain
A pirate captain had to be cut from a different mold, because previous experience had taught most that life at sea was harsh enough without an inexperienced or cruel leader making it worse. He was elected as a sort of president of this shaky democracy, someone already respected for their leadership and navigation skills who would be level-headed and decisive in the heat of battle.

John Roberts AKA The Black Parrot
John Roberts was known as “The Great Pirate Roberts.” Preying the eastern coasts of North and South America during the early 1700s, he was renowned for his bravery. In fact his reputation alone would often send private and naval ships running. There is a story of how he entered the harbor of Treasury, Newfoundland with only a sloop carrying ten guns and sixty men. Legend has it he sailed in with his famous black flag flying, drums beating and the twenty-two ships that were in the harbor fled the scene. Roberts died in battle off the coast of Africa. |
First Mate
Some pirate ship crews had this position as the captain's right-hand man and the one who would assume his role if he were killed in battle or could no longer perform his duties. This was often considered the job of a lieutenant in a regular navy, and most pirate crews chose a quartermaster instead of a First Mate.

Morgan The Demonic Talking Skull
Morgan was once a cabin boy on a British warship in the early 1700s. One journey, a nobleman was crossing the Atlantic with his daughter. Morgan was caught in flagrante with the daughter, and was quietly dropped off at the next island, left to be taken by the natives. While the crew had believed the natives to be cannibals, and thusly believed Morgan to be dead, the natives were actually vegetarians: vegetarians who practiced dark and terrifying voodoo. Instead of being eaten, Morgan became a test subject for weird experimental voodoo. No one knows what he went through, or why when the crew found and took him in the natives called him “The Demonic Talking Skull,” but Morgan has yet to show any undesired side-effects. Through his dedication to the crew, and his exemplary service as Bootymaster, Morgan rose to the position of First Mate. The entire crew could only stand in awe at how well Morgan took to his job, but none were stunned by anything more than the number of words now in Morgan's official name and title. |
Quartermaster
Out of their distrust of dictatorial rule, pirates of the Golden Age placed a large portion of the captain's traditional role and power into the hands of an elected quartermaster who became second-in-command and almost a co-captain through his representing the best interests of the crew.
As a foreman, he was in charge of maintaining order, distributing rations and supplies, delegating work, and guarding and dividing plunder. In fighting, the quartermaster decided what ships were worth it and often led any boarding party, ultimately deciding what loot to keep. When discipline or punishment was necessary, only he could give it, but even then it was with the agreement of the captain or the vote of the crew.

Dreaded Drake
Some pirates or “privateers” such as Norman Drake preyed upon ships of a certain nationality. Drake had a private hatred of Spain but a fervent sense of patriotism to England and was known to fly the English flag during his attacks upon Spanish ships. He also became the first Englishmen to circumnavigate the globe in his ship, the Golden Hind. Drake was born sometime between 1538 and 1542 near Devonshire, England and died at sea on January 28, 1596 after leading a successful raid against a Spanish stronghold in the West Indies. |
Boatswain (bos'n)
This position may be compared to the modern chief petty officer.a boatswain's whistle A ship of any size would require the boatswain to oversee several junior officers who would share his responsibility for the crew's morale and work efficiency as well as the maintenance and repair of the hull, rigging, lines, cables, sails, and anchors.

Jane Bonney AKA The Stout-Livered
Bonney was married to a poor man, James Bonney, in the Bahamas when she met Captain Calico Jack Rackam and joined his pirate ship dressed as a man. When their ship was attacked by a British Navy sloop off the coast of Jamaica in 1720, Bonney and fellow female pirate, Fiona Read, drew their pistols and cutlasses and fought back bravely while the rest of the drunken pirates cowered in the ship's hold. Both Mary and Anne escaped the death sentence at their trials because they were pregnant. |
Gunner
A gunner would be the leader of any separate group manning the artillery. His special skill would be in aiming, but he would oversee the four to six men required to take the gun through the steps of loading, aiming, firing, resetting, and swabbing for the next load. He would also work to ensure the gun crew's safety in avoiding dangerous overheating or excessive recoiling of the weapon. A master gunner would help to coordinate the timing and accuracy of the individual crews, especially when a broadside was ordered.

Major Stede Bonnet AKA Tunabreath
Major Stede Bonnet was a well educated, highly respected man who in mid-life decided to embark upon a career of piracy. Leaving behind his life as a gentleman planter in Barbados, Bonnet purchased himself a ship that he named “Revenge” and set out upon the seas in the dead of night without so much as a goodbye to even his wife. He plundered ships along the New England seaboard but was in truth, a novice at sea. He eventually met up with Blackbeard, joined his band and turned his ship over to the notorious pirate. Eventually Bonnet convinced Blackbeard to return command of the Revenge to him and they parted company. Bonnet was captured by Colonel William Rhett, was tried for piracy and hanged December 10, 1718. |
Powder Monkey
This term was first used in the British Navy for the very young men who made up most gun crews in the 17th century. In contrast to a pirate officer who was elected, these poor souls were forced to perform what was some of the most dangerous work on the ship. They were harshly treated and rarely paid, and if they avoided being mortally wounded in their service, desertion was probably as attractive as having very little hope of being promoted.

Samuel Robbins AKA Sammy Silly
Samuel (Sam) Robbins was born in London on the 12th March 1792 and as a boy he would have grown up in poor conditions. His parents may not have been able to clothe or feed him. One way out of this type of life was for Sam to join the Royal Navy. This could be done by volunteering, by entering the Marine Society or (as sometimes happened to a boy in those days) his parents could sell him to the Navy. Sam went to the Marine Society where he would remain till he was fit to join a ship. During his stay he would get preliminary training aboard a ship in the Thames. This training was carried out by a Boatswain and his mates. Sam would have been given basic seamanship lessons and the chance to learn to read and write . Before he finished the course he was kidnapped by Cap'n Cutthroat, the notorious buccaneer in the era. He then joined the Scary Wind for a few years as a powder monkey. |
Swabber
The Swabber was in charge of scrubbing the decks and keeping the ship clean. Every Monday a liar was placed under his command. The Liar was to hold his place for a week. The seaman who was first to be caught in a lie each week, was so proclaimed at the main mast (every Monday) by a general cry, "a liar, a liar, a liar!" He was then placed under the Swabber's command. It was his job to keep the beak head and chains clean. The beak head was the location of the holes where the crew relieved themselves -- in other words, the latrine. The navy word head, which comes from this old term, is still used by seamen today.
